Mathematics

Tyabb Railway Station Primary School strives to create pedagogical rich classrooms that promote and develop young mathematicians, and believes that teaching mathematics involves:

  • A developmental approach to learning and teaching
  • Learning and Teaching that builds on the needs and knowledge of the individual student
  • Problem solving experiences that apply knowledge to the real world
  • Students in active learning processes and use of hands-on materials
  • High focus on mathematical language
  • High focus on number fluency
  • Students working in flexible groupings-individual, small group, whole group
  • Use of instructional games where appropriate
  • Use of ICT to help foster deeper mathematical thinking
  • Use of a range of support materials for teaching and assessment such as, I Can statements and the Essential Assessment program

Our Mathematics program incorporates a developmental approach to student learning where teachers focus on students building on concepts, skills and processes developed in earlier years with these being revisited, strengthened and extended upon in later years in order to extend and deepen student knowledge, skills and mathematics understandings. Ongoing monitoring of student achievement and learning assists teachers to identify student needs so that they may set goals for future learning in conjunction with the students.
